packages: remove old leftover files and dirs

This subdir has mostly become an attic of never-used cruft from the
past.

- replace tabs with spaces where possible
- remove line ending spaces
- remove double/triple newlines at EOF
- fix a non-UTF-8 character
- cleanup a few indentations/line continuations
  in manual examples

not supporting it. It hasn't been functioning for years anyway, so this is
just finally stating what already was true. And a cleanup at the same time.
